What is the personality of the Whoodle?
Whoodles are a very friendly breed of dog that enjoys the company of all he comes across, making him a great addition to a family. Whoodles are known for being affectionate, friendly, intelligent, loving, playful and energetic. Because they are easily trainable and because they get along great with children, families and other pets, they make a great addition to any family. The Whoodle is a non-aggressive dog with a playful and friendly disposition.
How big is a Whoodle?
Our Whoodle parents are 30-50 pounds for our standard whoodles and 15-30 pounds for our mini-whoodles. Whoodles come in three sizes; miniature, medium and standard ranging from 12-20 inches in height and between 15-65 pounds.
What is the life span of a Whoodle?
The life span of a Whoodle is generally 12-15 years. The Whoodle is a generally healthy and hardy dog but as with any breed, health issues can come up from time to time. The Whoodle can suffer from hip dysplasia, allergies, ear infections, Addison’s disease and progressive retinal atrophy. Hybrid dogs tend to have less health issues than purebred dogs, but may sometimes have the same health concerns as their parent breeds. We at HOAW take the health of every puppy of upmost concern and perform multiple tests, including but not limited to Embark DNA Genetic testing, where parent dogs are tested and cleared for over 170 genetic conditions. We also work with one of Saint Louis’ best reproductive veterinarians to ensure the health and safety of our parents and their puppies.
How much should I groom my Whoodle?
The Whoodle is a low to moderate maintenance dog. They are non-shedding and have a long luxurious coats. They need regular brushing, as their coats can become matted and should be groomed every 2 to 3 months.
How much exercise should my Whoodle get?
A moderate walk daily, a quick romp at the park or in playing your back yard is optimal for your Whoodle’s physical and mental health. As a fun-loving dog, they will enjoy playing ball, jogging with you or entertaining you as they do laps around your back yard. Whoodles are sensitive to heat and the sun and will often seek shade when outside, so avoiding outside exercise when it is warm to hot is encouraged. They are not affected by the cold and most Whoodles love the snow.
I live in an apartment. Would a Whoodle be a breed I should get?
Absolutely! As long as they get daily exercise and stimulation they are happy. Often referred to as a “Velcro” dog, Whoodles are happy when they are, with you wherever they live.
I have other pets. How are Whoodles with other animals?
Whoodles are very social dogs and get along with other dogs, cats, birds, farm animals, etc. As long as they are socialized properly at a young age so that they don’t become scared of other animals, they will do great.
I am looking for a guard dog. Is a Whoodle a good choice?
Unfortunately not. As an extremely social and non-aggressive dog, a Whoodle will be more apt to bring his ball to a stranger or beg for a belly rub before he would bite.
I want a dog that is easily trainable. How hard is it to train a Whoodle?
Whoodles have the ability to learn things quickly and many Whoodles go on to be service or therapy dogs. They need to be trained with a soft and gentle hand rather than harsh tones or tactics. Positive reinforcement is necessary when training because they can be stubborn at times. They are tender dogs that do well with positive and loving training.
I have heard that Whoodles are hypo-allergenic. Is this true?
Yes, this is true. Whoodles are considered a hypo-allergenic breed and are suitable for allergy sufferers due to BOTH parent breeds being hypoallergenic and completely non-shedding. But because welcoming a puppy into your home is a lifetime commitment, please reach out to us or someone who already has a Whoodle and visit with the dog to see if you have any reactions. Most people never have any reactions to the Whoodle when they have had reactions to other dogs and doodles.
